A public-safety initiative for one of Alaska's most unique environments.

Turnagain Arm produces one of the largest tidal bores in North America. Each year people die or require rescue from preventable encounters with the bore, the cold water, and the glacial silt mudflats. Most of these encounters trace back to a single problem: people did not know what they did not know.

This initiative exists to close that gap with three free, modern, accessible resources: a self-paced Safe Surfer Test, a documentary surf safety film, and a short mudflat hazard video for visitors, hotels, and in-flight programming.

What this is not

This is not certification. Completing the course does not qualify anyone to surf the bore. It does not replace professional instruction, a local guide, or hard-earned experience. It is one input — an awareness layer — designed to help people make better decisions before they enter the water or step on the flats.

We aim to collaborate with the Alaska State Troopers, Alaska Department of Natural Resources, Alaska Department of Fish and Game, United States Coast Guard, Anchorage Fire Department, Alaska SeaLife Center, the local surf community, tour operators, hotel associations, and Alaska Airlines for onboard educational opportunities.
