In an emergency, call 911.

If someone is stuck in the mudflats

  1. Call 911 immediately. Do not walk out to them.
  2. Keep the person calm; have them lean back to distribute weight.
  3. Do not let them yank the trapped limb — it sets the suction harder.
  4. Note GPS coordinates if possible. Direct responders to the nearest highway pullout.
  5. Mark their position from shore (a fixed visual reference) so responders can locate them.

If a surfer fails to return when expected

  1. Call 911 and report the launch and expected exit locations.
  2. Provide vehicle description and last-known position.
  3. Do not enter the water to search.

If you are in trouble in the water

  1. Stay with your board. It is the most visible thing on the water.
  2. Conserve heat. Get knees to chest if possible.
  3. Signal shore: arm waves, whistle, light.
