Safe Surfer Assessment

Turnagain Arm Safety Initiative

Turnagain Arm produces one of North America's largest bore tides and one of its most extreme marine environments. Use this learning portal to study key safety guidelines, assess your preparation, and earn your safety awareness certificate.

This is awareness, not certification.

Completing this course does not qualify you to surf the bore tide. It is designed to improve awareness and decision-making. Always surf with experienced locals or hire a qualified guide.

Core Hazards Reference

Three rules every surfer must respect.

1. Do not walk on the mudflats

Glacial silt acts like wet concrete around your feet, locking you down. With the returning tide sweeping in at 5-6 mph, rescue is rarely possible. Stay on gravel shores.

2. Cold water shock kills first

With water temperatures in the 30s to 40s°F, cold shock causes immediate involuntary gasping and swimming failure within 10 minutes. 5/4mm or 6/5mm wetsuit gear is mandatory.

3. Scrutinize the bore wave

The bore wave runs up to 15 mph and carries logs, tree root balls, and ice chunks. Channels shift constantly. Local scouting and companion surfing are vital.
